With the UK government preparing for a new road safety strategy, vision standards for drivers are under the spotlight. FODO - The Association for Eye Care Providers and the UK's other national bodies are united in calling for stronger, mandatory vision checks for drivers.
The evidence is clear:
▪️ One in four people are worried someone they know drives with poor vision
▪️ Current self-declaration and number plate tests are not always fit for purpose
▪️ Regular professional checks could prevent avoidable accidents and save lives
At IbisVision, we believe that to deliver this call for change, technology must play a vital role. Remote testing solutions like ours can:
▪️ Provide quick, accessible vision checks for all ages
▪️ Reduce the burden on practices by supporting scalable, community-based testing
▪️ Enable preventative monitoring and early detection of vision changes
▪️ Support public health campaigns with easy-to-use digital tools
By modernising how we assess vision, we can keep people safer on the roads while helping drivers remain independent for longer.
The call for mandatory vision checks is an opportunity to rethink how we deliver them - smarter, more accessible, and more consistent. IbisVision stands ready to support the profession, policymakers and the public in bringing this change to life.
